Happy New Year, Our First Orchid Import of 2017 is Underway.

With the new year we needed some new orchids, the paperwork is with the Kenyan authorities, once they give the OK we can book a flight. This import is mainly made up of the Dendrobiums Alliance as our stock was getting rather thin. A few old favorites and a few new ones to choose from. There are a number of new Antelope Orchid crosses (the dendrobium flowers with the ears) which we have had great results with here. Just hover your mouse over the photos to stop the slide shows or move through quickly, enjoy.

As always some new varieties to choose from, for the collector I have a few seedling size Fredclarkeara After Dark “SVO” Black Pearl, said to be the only true black flowering orchid. New to us at the nursery are Cleisostoma arietinum and discolor, Cycnoches warszewiczii x Catasetum tenebrosum, Paphiopedilum maudiae ‘black’, Trichoglottis orchidea and Oncidium Yuan Nan Gold. From the Vanda Alliance Rhynchostylis Gigantea Cartoon and Vanda Chao Phraya Violet.

Cattleya I have brought in only a few, most are well tested and back by popular demand but I have included a interesting Cattleya x Laelia that looks like it may be rather interesting.

As always I have not bought many of each type, so book your plants early to save disappointment.

I strongly suggest you do some research on the orchids you propose to grow to confirm they are suited to your climate (good books seem most reliable or just google the name, for most there is plenty of info/help). All are subject to availability.

The Flower pictures are as examples of what the flowers will look like, not pictures of the plants for sale.

Freight Costs for Orchid deliveries around Kenya with Wells Fargo

We now offer courier rates for the transporting of our Orchids around the country using Wells Fargo. After using them to get our last Thailand orchid order from Nairobi to Malindi and the highly professional way they cared for a perishable cargo, I am confident they can get the job done.

There is a standard 5 kg minimum weight with Wells Fargo. To give you an idea of what that amounts to, I am sending two established orchids in 15 cm clay pots today, they weigh 4.5kgs packed. After that every extra kg costs 50/- (This can change to more remote areas).

We sell either blooming sized plants or to a lesser degree near blooming size. To see the orchids we have in stock go to (all subject to availability)  Hanging Gardens Stock or if you are on Facebook contact me at Hanging Gardens Facebook Page

Below are some prices to major centres around Kenya for a shipment below 5 Kgs. Prices include Postage & Packing.

Mombasa                                     Ksh. 750/-

Nairobi                                           Ksh. 1,050/-

New Orchids for Sale from our latest Thai Import

It has now been a week since our new orchids arrived at the garden. We have now potted or mounted all the orchids and got them up to scratch again.

We have a very varied selection of orchids for sale that you can choose from this time including, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium, Bulbophyllum, Aerides & Rhynchostylis. I have tried to keep the prices in the same range for each type as we had for our last import, even with the unfavourable exchange rate. With the advantage of not being tied to buying large numbers of each type, I have brought in a select few more expensive orchids to see how they go. I also took the chance to try out a few I don’t know to see if they will one thrive here and two are commercially viable in the Kenyan market.

We have this time planted straight into terracotta orchid pots (10, 15 & 20 cm), making the plants slightly more expensive but the results are in a different league to the plastic pots. Our aim is to get everybody succeeding with orchids and these pots reduce the drying time considerably and therefore alleviate the over watering problems some what. I have also mounted a few choice plants onto wood  as well as some hanging baskets.

I have added pictures of the plants, some are already flowering but most of the flower pictures are as examples from the supplier or the web.
